Dianthus Barbatus
Known as 'Sweet William' this is an excellent plant for the late spring-early summer garden. It comes in a variety of colors, markings and heights. This photo is one of my favorites with the fringed edges. There are some nice reds too.

Dianthus barbatus is a favorite old cottage garden plant, a member of the carnation family. It is a bienniel or short-lived perennial, about 12-24" tall, easily grown from seed. It comes in shades of white, pink, red, black, and bicolors.

This plant barely made it through the winter and hardly flowered this season, it would die, turn yellow then grow new foliage and repeat this all season. Not happy with this plant.

I was wondering if you can seperate it and put it in other pots. It seems to spread and gets to small for one pot.

Quite prolific. It may be a biennial but it comes back every year.

Dianthus barbatus
Nice blooms in late spring
It's a biennial that will grow new plants from the base of the currently blooming plants (Sometimes up to a foot away). The new plants will bloom the next year. It will creep through the garden. Easy to grow from seed.

Dianthus barbatus--Sweet William
Pretty little biennial dianthus which blooms in large clusters rather than singly. Flowers just after the irises. Another good cottage garden plant. Very old. Doesn't smell too good, contrary to its name.
