NutCracker20 - Upper Michigan
I really did not know if I liked this plant but everytime I look at it I like it more each year. It really reminds me of corn when the flower opens up. I have 1 that is growing up against the back of my house, and about a dozen of them in the front of my house, I think I will keep them. They do seem to grow more and more each year I just hope it does not become invasive.

Very pretty spikes of yellow flowers. Reseeding can get out of hand and roots can go deep into the soil. Dead heading creates multiple new spikes.

Another garden volunteer. Mullein looks neat from the highway, but it is even better up close and personal. I actually had one grow up inside my gazing ball!

(My photo is V. bombyciferum; Giant Silver Mullein). They both like dry, sunny spots, so are perfect for the small strip between sidewalk and street. This group has self-seeded for several years. It can be a problem near the sidewalk as the silvery leaves are so huge.

Mullein is a biennial herb which produces a basal rosette of large, thick, fuzzy, oval leaves in the first year. These leaves survive through the winter. In the second year, mullein sends up a tall, sometimes branched, flower stalk which can reach 8'. Mullein has medicinal and other uses.

Frost on a Mullein rosette.
This plant volunteers at my garden plot. I love it. It wards off evil spirits (some say).
