Convallaria majalis
These came back in 2005, after years of struggling. I am in the wrong zone of them, they do better back east.

Flowers & leaves (close up).
I've given it an 8 for fragrance only because you don't notice it unless you're close up to the flowers: but when you are, they have a most beautiful fragrance.

I too have been waiting a while to see this bloom. The house came with many plants, but it took three years to see blooms. I top-dressed with compost last year, now they bloom. Very fragrant, but unfortunately the only childhood memory it brings back for me is something to do with soap. This is planted in the shade under a lilac tree, and blooms at the same time.

Blooming in April.
The fragrance of this little flower is my absolute favorite, so I would never be without it, but it can be invasive. It's best grown in a contained area, or you'll have it all over your shaded flower bed. The foliage is attractive all season long.

Lily-of-the-valley is a great carefree groundcover for the shade garden. Propagate by division.

Easy growers in shady spots. Mine love to be up against cool walls, with damp ground and partial shade. They divide easily, flower profusely and a extremely poisonous. When mine bloom will add a photo of them. If someone wants to trade for some, that would be fine.
