Hibiscus mutabilis
white flower magically turned to pink
My confederate rose opens white in the morning, gradually gets pinker all day until finally turning a dark rose. (Photo taken late in the day - about 4 pm). The leaves are attractive, but wilt on hot days. Also, caterpillars find the leaves irresistable. Despite these small aggravations, it is one of my favorite plants - easy to grow, fun to watch and a real beauty.

Hibiscus mutabilis
This plant was started from a small cutting this year and I was pleased to see so many blooms in the first year. Each bloom starts out light pink and turns to dark pink by evening then falls off. Mary from Gainesville, GA

Ann04, The legend that I heard about the Confederate rose is this. It starts out white, but because of the large amount of blood on the battlefield where it was growing caused the flowers to turn red or dark pink. The plant that I have is white but by the late afternoon is dark pink.

Hibiscus mutabilis
Confederate Rose (mid-day)
Cuz Becky, in West Florida gave me a rooted cutting this summer (I'm in Neptune Beach, FL). It was about 4 to 6" tall. It is now over 6'! Loaded with buds and blooms in every shade from white to deep rose. Beautiful!

Close-up of pink flower
The Confederate Rose grows into a rather large shrub; flowers well with adequate moisture. It is a show stopper in October. Section stem cuttings taken before frost root easily in water or soil in a frost-free environment. The pink one stays pink but fades to red. The white one changes to pink, and then fades to red.
