Mine have not flowered yet, but I grew them from seed last summer. I think I would be happy even if they never flowered. The fern-like foliage is gorgeous all by itself!

Achillea millefolium
Flowering in July
There are some really neat colors available now with the different cultivars, but as far as I know, all are still relatively aggressive plants. I like the ferny foliage and the flat-topped flower clusters, but I have to work to keep them from taking over the surrounding plants and the flowers want to flop over.

I would grow this just for the foliage, it is so lovely and lacy-looking. To keep it from spreading I cut the bottom out of a very large nursery pot (the kind big trees come in) and sink it in the ground with just a few inches above. It contains the plant very well, as long as you deadhead so you don't get seeds growing.

After it flowers, I cut back the flower stalk. It survives our intense summers quite well.

This has been an easy plant for me to grow - almost too easy. I'd rank this plant (overall) higher than an "8" if it didn't spread so much in my garden. If you have the space, this is a wonderful plant to add to a wildflower garden.

This is the original wild white yarrow, which is native and quite common throughout Alberta. Shown with Erigeron glabellus, smooth fleabane, another prairie native.

Grows and tolerates drought well, but doesn't reseed good in the South. Var. "Summer Pastels" and "Paprika" (pic.) have some wonderful colours. Shortcoming: flop-y flower stalks.
