Equisetum arvense
   by Nora_in_Vancouver
Remarks:
This is an invasive weed. Long underground root structures make control difficult. It releases spores after first breaking ground, then grows taller later. In my back alley, horsetails are coming up through asphalt. Requires damp conditions; this patch growing over a drainage outfall. A living fossil from the Carboniferous Period, 300 million years ago.
